{"id":648,"date":"2012-03-01T17:39:56","date_gmt":"2012-03-02T01:39:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bjdecastro.com\/art-blog\/?p=648"},"modified":"2012-03-01T17:48:01","modified_gmt":"2012-03-02T01:48:01","slug":"ranchita-arroyo-grande-morning-underpainting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bjdecastro.com\/art-blog\/2012\/03\/ranchita-arroyo-grande-morning-underpainting\/","title":{"rendered":"Ranchita Arroyo Grande Morning &#8211; Underpainting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bjdecastro.com\/art-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/ranchita-arroyo-grande3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-649\" title=\"ranchita-arroyo-grande3\" src=\"http:\/\/bjdecastro.com\/art-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/ranchita-arroyo-grande3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Ranchita Arroyo Grande Morning - underpainting\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/bjdecastro.com\/art-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/ranchita-arroyo-grande3-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/bjdecastro.com\/art-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/ranchita-arroyo-grande3.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I finally get to enjoy the wonderful smell of my oil paints and feel the brushes in my hands.\u00c2\u00a0 ;)\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I begin the underpainting.<\/p>\n<p>Oak trees are the most amazingly shaped\u00c2\u00a0trees on the planet and probably the most fun to paint.\u00c2\u00a0 It almost looks like I have tried to finish the foreground tree trunk&#8230;but no.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 That is just decades of\u00c2\u00a0studying the abstract shapes in the trunk and branches of these majestic trees and utilizing my brush\u00c2\u00a0strokes in a way that the very thinned down oil paint pudddles where I want it.\u00c2\u00a0 As the Turpenoid dries (very quickly), I am able to achieve a sense of form and tiny shapes.<\/p>\n<p>Once the painting progresses, all that you see now in the tree trunk will be covered up with subsequent layers.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0However this initial modeling with the thin paint\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0helps me\u00c2\u00a0to make decisions for later.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I am sorting out my final choices in\u00c2\u00a0values of \u00c2\u00a0light, darks and\u00c2\u00a0shapes to see how they will influence the perspective.\u00c2\u00a0 A process that\u00c2\u00a0all artists must constantly be aware of from beginning to end.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I finally get to enjoy the wonderful smell of my oil paints and feel the brushes in my hands.\u00c2\u00a0 ;)\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I begin the underpainting.
